I know you're busy with projects as we hit week 6, but the Fall TV season is under way and all the faculty can only watch so much. We rely on you all to guide us so drop your 2 cents here or via email or on the department's social media pages.

I have made it through some of the new shows (and some of the returning) and here are my thoughts so far:

Quantico: Surprise fun here as this is more crazed dramatic soap/action/thriller than suspense (though there is some of that). I have no idea how it can last more than 1 season, but then again, How to Get Away with Murder is managing. Who's the terrorist? Secret twins! Fake gay man glasses! Can I get past the stunning combo of crazy beautiful stars who so far appear to be good actors to boot?

Blood and Oil: Have been intrigued enough by the cast and Dallas-meets-frakking premise to stay tuned. Totally getting my 80s fix on between this and Empire (hip hop/rap/soul meets Dynasty). P.S.--Cookie channeling Debbie Allen rocks my world.

Scream Queens? Cannot make up my mind on this one...The pilot was decent (especially the 2nd half). But seriously, where is the Jonas brother? And what be up with the daughter accusing her dad of being a murderer? (Sorry--the lead gal is way too bland and cannot carry the camp.) Gigi as the hag of Shady Lane--nice! This show makes me insane--they follow no internal logic (you're sequestered! Yet the next episode has half the campus venturing off-site to investigate crimes no sane undergrad would be into...) I kind of feel like Ryan Murphy hates college kids as he portrays them as really, really stupid and vapid. But now I have to see this through to its end. (Hate to say it--Scream on MTV is better...)

Returning dramas other than Empire: Good Wife continues to be the most cable-worthy drama on broadcast IMHO. Rolling over the cast smoothly flipping over who works with whom...And getting to see Jane Curtin as a judge a sheer moment of viewer beauty. Madame Secretary continues to balance charming humor with tension and ethical dilemmas--it's a pretty solid lineup and will make Sunday night battles interesting.

New sitcoms. OK--I soooo did not expect to like Grandfathered, but getting to see Josh Peck and John Stamos and my fave actress Paget Brewster together is a delight and the show is charming. The Grinder also brings together old faves (Rob Lowe and Fred Savage)...and it delightfully sends up our country's obsession with procedurals. Throw in the return of Brooklyn 99 and FOX is delivering on the sitcom front in the most sophisticated way compared to the other networks in the broadcast universe.

OK--must sign off. Have to catch up on other series I am way behind on. I must say, I find it intriguing that a lot of the new fare is catering to the Gen Xers, with "weird" nods to the older Millennials....(Don't get me started on how I stayed up late this week to watch Double Dare on The Splat, and am jouncing for more Clarissa and old Are You Afraid of the Dark and You Can't Do That on Television...)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-59103510203265757252015-09-04T05:25:00.001-07:002015-09-04T05:25:31.271-07:00First Day of Classes is Almost Here!Welcome back (or welcome anew) as we start off our 2015/16 school year in TV with Convocation in Grant Park and classes September 8th! (Remember folks with Monday classes--you'll be 1 week "behind" with your Mondays, so follow your course schedule accordingly...)

There have been several changes in the TV Department over the summer. Our Student Activities Coordinator, Christy LeMaster, is off elsewhere in the world work-wise--but still teaching with us in Critical Studies (and our undergrad run journal WaterCooler is still running strong with some help from Faculty Sara Livingston http://watercoolerjournal.com/issues/ ) Some of our tech support staff are also elsewhere and we are busily adjusting to the change in duties--so be sure to seek us out if you have questions or need help!

We also have a new faculty member from Los Angeles, Bill Rosenthal; he is already hitting the ground running with planning for FreqOut through to spring. We're excited to have another faculty member on board with experience in the industry! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0742734/ You'll find Bill in producing classes and he'll be in the 14th floor faculty office hallway with the rest of the crew.

I will be upstairs on the 15th floor as your Interim Chair with Eric Scholl as your Associate Chair. We also have a new Interim Dean in the School of Media Arts--Constantin Rasinariu--so if you see folks you don't know this year, jump in and introduce yourself. :D

If I'm your advisor, hang tight--you might be reassigned as the year goes on so we can ensure you get the full assistance for course advising you need. They make me go to a lot of meetings as Interim Chair, so finding me might be trickier than usual. But in general I can be found on Mondays and Fridays, with occasional Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in the mix.

I'm also sure to be busy trying to keep up with the over 400 new shows emerging this Fall--there has been a lot of insightful commentary recently about what the "glut" of solidly good shows out there says about the industry and the impact on our culture http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2015/08/16/432458841/television-2015-is-there-really-too-much-tv?utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=popculture I certainly had my hands full just this summer (I state here: Wet Hot American Summer the TV series was better than the movie--though truly it IS a package deal. Go watch both.) Right now I'm trying to vet what I'll test out to squeeze into the returning shows I cannot quit watching and the need to binge through the rest of Orphan Black. Rising to the top so far are the following:

The Grinder--Rob Lowe, Fred Savage. Nuff said.
Because of the "busy" and because I will expect all of you to fill me in on the shows I don't get too, occasionally I'll host some open sessions in the TV Office for dropping by to chat. I can't feed all of you, so the basic rule is the first 24 students can score a donut. First session is Wednesday 9/30, 1-2pm--come tell me your thoughts on anything you've seen and l;et me know how your semester is going!

See you soon...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-15572907002236010602015-06-28T15:47:00.005-07:002015-06-28T16:06:35.199-07:00I can tell you personally, but so can many of my former students...I aim to be an open-minded woman. But I am excited this weekend to see the SCOTUS decision about marriage in the states.

I was born and bred Catholic, and have a deep respect for the Christianity the infuses my upbringing and formed who I am as a human being.

I simply wish to have here, as a statement for ME as a representative of the Television Department, that we celebrate the recent Supreme Court decision as a movement forward in acceptance of our students' ability to embrace the full spectrum of creativity that is available to them. We may not all agree on the specifics of life and living, but if we can agree to respect each other and support each other as artistic professionals, then we will have moved our "world" forward "just enough."

But do yourself a favor as an incoming STORYTELLER. Go see Inside Out. Forget about animation(though abstract Danger Zone was brilliance). Just...

watch. revel in the story. remember what it was (is?) like to go through a major life change and be mad/sad/fearful/joyful-excited...and, yes, sad at what you are leaving behind you.

Inside Out works because it touches us--as little kids, as parents, as storytellers/story-READERS.

If you're new to Columbia this year, just go see it.
If you're "old" to Columbia this year, the same.

It might inspire you on many platforms.

NOW--someone score me the Lava short that preceded the film--sheer brilliance.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-52902339253015605662015-06-17T15:25:00.004-07:002015-06-18T11:26:54.357-07:00Welcome 2015 TV Department Students!So--what are some of the starting basics you need aside from the 50,000 sheets of paper shoved at you already?

You have my welcome note from Orientation. So that and the info from Laura Levitt-Gamis gets you off to a great start. BUT...Here are some tips from the instructor perspective:

1) if books are assigned to the course, get them. You can find them cheap, any which way you want. But just get them--we don't assign a book if it's not actually useful. (and we teach classes assuming you've read...)

2a) "homework" in college is a different bag than in high school. A lot occurs online (know your class Moodle page--come see me if that sounds bizarre). The expectations are also different. While due dates count, in college a lot is about you learning to manage your time--a job you might have, family, extracurriculars...The "rule" is that for every credit hour you're enrolled, you should be spending 2-3 hours reading/creating/researching/studying. So if you're in a 3 credit class (the norm), anticipate at least 6 hours of outside class work on average per week for just that one class. I get that this means being a full-time student (15 credits)= a full-time job. This makes planning your semester important: when I was an undergrad, I worked 35 hours a week as a waitress, took 22 credits (yep--I was nutty that way!)--but got it done with room for fun and games because I worked to plan carefully. 2b) IF YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON IN YOUR FAMILY TO TRY AT A 4-YEAR DEGREE, COME SEE ME. Your world is different and we have sources to connect you with others who understand your circumstances and can provide support..

3) Are you new to living in Chicago? OK--first--go explore as much as you can until the frigid winter hits! Find the following:

a) the Bean
b) Maggie Daly Park (trust me--some of the slides are total fun for non-kids and there's skating and rock climbing)
c) scope out the "hoods" as we refer to them...there's the 606 elevated track (http://www.the606.org/ ) and the lakefront and tons of places to just exercise in nature!
d) find food!! CHEAP food! There are a gazillion ethnic neighborhoods in Chicago, most accessible by train. Mexican, Polish, South American, Southern...you just need to dig it all up online. Near campus there is a good bounty-from good ole' fashioned chains to more independent eateries. No matter what, do yourself a favor and get Harold's Chicken at some point (on Wabash, right around the corner from our main building http://haroldschickendowntown.com/) and Hackney's on Dearborn for a heftier meal good for parental visiting (http://www.hackneysprintersrow.net/) and for sure do Flaco's Tacos (http://flacostacosonline.com/).

OK--I am a foodie and can direct you...

What are you watching right now that gets you excited about being in a television department?

Past students will tell you my TV tastes are hard to predict. Here's what's on my watch list in mid June:

--binging the rest of Orange is the New Black, Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Orphan Black, Finding Carter; getting my husband to catch up on iZombie so we can discuss; anticipating Switched at Birth, The Good Wife and Madame Secretary, How to get Away with Murder, Empire, Hot Wet American Summer, Kimmy Schmidt, Transparent...NEED SOMEHOW to watch Scream Queens and Scream...

Point being there is just an abundance of truly innovative "TV" right now. So if you're "here"--well. embrace the journey!

Come see me... I'm in the main TV office most days other than when I'm teaching my Nickelodeon class or in meetings (or making sure my soon-to-be-second-grader is getting HIS homework done:D).
OK Folks—so we’re back to another year in
Columbia TV Land! Most of you who
stumble across my blog will be new (or perennially attached to the department)
students. So I’ll offer my typical “starting new here” advice, and then move on
to what we should all REALLY care about—new TV shows! :D

Let’s start with the basics. Food. As a
teacher, let me tell you—we all understand the need for grabbing a bite
in-between classes, or caffeinating yourself on break. BUT—you can’t use this
as an excuse for running late. Dunkin is fast and furious—Panera is healthy,
but slower. Forget the Starbucks unless you know how to tightly control your
arrival/return times. For lunch, more leisurely...My top picks (and there are
often various discounts you can score): Flaco’s Tacos, Hackney’s, Tamarind,
Yolk.

But fair warning:you’re likely to be in the
midst of peers and professors, so watch what you say unless you’re in a
secluded booth that disguises your voice, to boot! :D Also, look for Beaver’s Donuts food
truck—they periodically appear near Wabash and LaSalle and are beyond yummy.

Next. Basic learning tips (especially if you’re
new here...): Take the time to actually meet your teachers. Social media rocks
but for teachers with a slew of students, the best way for us to truly connect
with you is face-to-face, even if only for a 10 minute hello. Hit us up before
advising starts in mid-October, because then we’re swamped with quick meetings
that, while important, are less substantial in terms of getting to know you.
The profs will hate me for telling you this, but those first 5-6 weeks are
“golden time” for you as students to have a session with us that really starts
to cement a long-term relationship. We’re here to help you and genuinely look
to converse with you—take advantage of those “less crazy” weeks we have!

Also—know your departmental team and meet
them. IN TV: Laura Levitt-Gamis is a sweetheart who knows the ins-and-outs of
everything in our department. She is the lovely lady in the main TV Office who
can answer most any question. Eric Scholl is your associate chair this
year—meet him! He handles, well, a mess
of stuff but let’s go with the general tag of “all things students are worried
about.” And please, meet your chair
Michael Niederman. He’s beyond nice and very down-to-earth and as a chair can
only teach so much. So do yourself a favor and meet him before you have a
problem/question/concern—because you really should just actually MEET your
chair.

STAFF: THEY ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS HERE—THEY MAKE THE DEPARTMENT
RUN IN MORE WAYS THAN I CAN COUNT, SO PLEASE DON’T DISCOUNT THEM AS “JUST
STAFF” (particularly as many also teach and
create). Internship stuff right now is Niki Hoffman (we’re hiring a new person
soon, as Niki is Queen of all productions at the school, which keeps her pretty
busy...). Want to get involved in making the department run and shine? Find
Christy LeMaster. Aiming for employment in the department? Meet David Greene and Chris West and Tamale
Sepp. Honestly—just walk the 7th/14th floors and pop in
and say hi for 2 minutes (tell them I said it was ok) and then come back when
you need to. (Like to engineer the mechanics of things or interested in the
mobile truck?—hit the 15th floor and look for Dave Mason...My 6
year-old can vouch for his appreciation of a positive “can-do” attitude.)

Some changes for our returning students. I’m NOT associate chairing this year; I am
taking a much-needed break while the amazing Eric Scholl takes over. (Yes—I
still have all my action dolls and DVDs and books but they’re now at 1401-J. I
will also continue to advise and offer guidance on the bigger picture things
you’re facing—but now I’m back-up to Eric as opposed to the frontline. :D) Fawn
Ring, our amazing producing lecturer, has left for truly greener pastures at
the Art Institute. Some of her classes have been taken over by the remarkable
Tyler Kempf. (IF YOU IN ANY WAY GLORY IN SKETCH COMEDY, YOU’LL WANT TO MEET
THIS MAN—YOU CAN FIND HIM ON THE 14TH FLOOR ABOUT A ½ “BLOCK” BEFORE
MY OFFICE.) Our fabulous news guy, Frank Bianco, also is gone to a
well-deserved retirement—just come see me, Eric, or Michael if you’re yearning
to head in the direction of news...

So...Oriented enough? :D Let’s move on the fun of TV—what we’re all
watching/want to watch/are sorry we watched...

There is always too much to enjoy in the
summer. If you know me, you understand I spent (and am still spending) time
watching everything on ABC Family and MTV (scripted). I liked most, am hopeful
for a bunch more...But have had the most fun with Orphan Black (am in utter withdrawal) and Drunk History (just has been brilliant this summer) and now
catching up on You’re the Worst (I cannot begin to explain the “so wrong
funny” of this show...). But, being the TV geek critic I am, I am salivating
over new Fall shows.

1980s (let alone how those comedy specials helped cement HBO’s status as
must-have cable long before The Sopranos)
is crucial to much of what we are able to watch now. Do yourself a favor and go
watch a sampling of his TV work—especially the fabulous Comic Relief specials on HBO. His was a tragic passing and as most
of us know, tragedy is the flip side of the comedic genius coin; do him honor
by reviewing his work (and paying maybe just a little extra attention to those
around you who suffer for their art).

Joan Rivers’ passing truly caught me
off-guard as well. She was such a vibrant presence in the world of TV and
comedy and a role model to many—but especially to women seeking to break into
the media and comedy arts. As with Robin Williams, her role in TV’s history is
mighty—from being the “go-to” host on The
Tonight Show, to being banned from it for daring to compete against it
rather than wait a gazillion years. And seriously—Fashion Police is probably the best thing (other than The Soup) on E!—and come to think of it,
there would be no ballsy Chelsea Handler aiming to revolutionize the internet
right now without Joan. We are lucky as a school to have had her visit Columbia
last February—she was charming and acerbic and I’m pretty sure I peed my pants
a little during her “talk.” Find her old stuff—she’s a wonderful inspiration to
both aspiring comics and well, really, those who aspire to anything that others
scoff at.

your “elder”: Doors close so that windows may open. As Robin Williams
brilliantly delivered in a fab script—“Carpe Diem”/Seize the Day.
College—especially at Columbia—is what you make of it. Embrace the victories and the defeats as part of the same bundle that

I don't know so much. Murphy Brown? Roseanne? Brilliant series that I didn't see through to the end because they frankly overstayed their welcome. Much like How I Met Your Mother--which I don't think overstayed so much as it meandered into nothingness.

So here's how you wrap up a show--short-list style:

Cheers
MASH (sort of)
Newhart 2.0
Lost (it stayed true to the core of the crazy)
Friends (wrapped up what we needed to be wrapped up, and made you forgive Monica's descent into shrill annoyance)
St. Elsewhere (say what you will, it set a template)

My still worst ending ever likely has to be Seinfeld...and oddly, HIMYM reminded me of this.

1) don't insert 20 minutes of depression (melancholy is ok--depression is not) for a sitcom finale.
2) divorce I can live with. A character who developed and grew emotionally over a few seasons suddenly regressing in fast-forward to "baby=love!" is a cop out. Daddies loving their babies is not "new." Daddies loving their babies of a woman we never see is retrograde.
3) Killing off the mom? REALLY?! You could have gone there if you'd led up to it sooner and more subtly. Don't give us a great actress and cool female character and then kill her off because you need to satisfy some fan quotient for a coupling. Let Robin stay single--AND HAPPY. Maybe Barney with the baby-momma in a couple would have been progressive and even "deep." I don't know--felt very "kill off the ladies" to me (both literally and symbolically)--which is weird for a show called How I Met Your MOTHER. Somebody has been watching too much Disney.

OK--on to more interesting TV items before my son's spring break starts...

1) I have watched Doll and Em. I enjoy Doll and Em. I am not blown away by Doll and Em.

2) Pilot of Silicon Valley? LOVED IT! Remarkable cast, and curious to see what they'll do with the death of a lead actor. I could do without the tech gal who looks like she's shy of being a supermodel by a few inches--but I like the potential of her character. (Might be nice to see somehow Felicia Day--I know that's a different world, but still-there must have been some key women somewhere in this mix of SV...) I'll withhold final judgment though--I did like the hierarchies laid out and the dismantling of "I'm rich and uneducated" philanthropy at work.

3) Colbert as Letterman? OK--I'm mixed. I love Stephen Colbert. He knows his pop culture and I want to see Fallon dump pennies on his head. But, I don't know him as anything but a character. Daily Show, Colbert Show--he's always been in some kind of character. Fallon was always Fallon, Kimmel was always Kimmel. And (not that I have any best replacements, but...) it might have been nice to see a lady. In 10 years, yet again, we''re looking at a lot of old hip but white men running the cool spot of late-night comedy...

4) Stray. For all that is holy, let's see what happens with Mad Men. Sopranos be damned, this show rocks my world better. And even more: WATCH ORPHAN BLACK!!! If you are inspired by either a) good acting for women, b) good roles for women, c) messed up take on science and health and family...well, just watch it. Even if it only is good for one more season it will have been the best available to us in some time.

5) That being said, broadcast still rocks. The follow-up to The Good Wife rocked. And Brooklyn 99's season finale made me pee my pants pretty much. Andre Braugher is a god and any show that can end with warmth and hilarity and visual gags is going to make me take notice. It's like Community had a baby with Parks and Rec. WATCH IT!!!

OK-on to seeing what happens when my 5 year old and his buddy come to be guest speakers in my Nickelodeon class...

That's my still stunned reaction to The Good Wife. Let me wax historical and philosophic and industrial for a sec here. Coming off of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference, I am struck by the lack of attention to broadcast fare. Can we still remember that most folks watch the Big 4 (and any number of basic cable channels like USA, TBS, MTV...). Where were the panels on the fun and fan-glory of Cougar Town, Psyched, Teen Wolf, PLL? Where were the panels on the remarkable inclusion of ASL on Switched at Birth or the stunning (albeit melodramatic) inclusion of "other family structures" on The Fosters? So I'll end my brief rant on how SCMS TV Studies panels too often replicate "Film Best Of" approaches to move on to what I've been privy to over spring break... (except to say, after a chat with a British scholar, that we still don't have enough truly valuable workshop/panels pertaining to the harsh realities/what-do-I-do-nows of MAs. MFAs, and PHds, and adjuncts--to our own peril...)

OK--my confessions. I don't watch Walking Dead--too much other good TV and I adore the novel. Behind on True Detective (too new, and sorry--and I am a former Austinite--McConaughey be crazy ego boy so I don't expect him to stick with the series...)

So--I stick to my tried and trues. Broadcast TV--especially when you ponder the limitations--is doing a variety of ass-kicking. Brooklyn 99 is hysterical and chock-full of stellar comedic acting at its best. Big Bang is holding its own and worthy of its renewal for 3 years. Why is no one discussing Parenthood's crazy survival (or doing a panel on Katims)? And please, why has there not been an almost-plenary on what Community has been from so many different perspectives?! Or Parks and Rec?

OK--enough about how SCMS shuns broadcast. Now my random Spring Break reactions to the finales I've seen.

1) Switched at Birth. Sorry, this is landmark TV, plain and simple. Can you recall, outside of appointment series, the last time a series (let alone a teen series), necessitated that you look full-on at the screen? I'll leave aside the compelling story lines and just go with the fact that ASL means you have to WATCH to catch the nuances and tremendous acting (both by deaf and hearing actors). And Community and Big Bang fans-- Katie LeClerc, a hearing impaired actress from this series, did time here. It's great teen drama, showcasing ASL actors like Ryan Lane (also in Veronica Mars--the movie) and Marlee Matlin. Watch it. It will make you happy. OH--and Sandra Bernhardt--nuff said?

2) The Fosters. J-Lo's involved--and it might be the most truly meaningful work she's attached to. We seldom see the foster care system examined from a variety of angles, let alone the ins-and-outs of a lesbian couple doing the fostering. This is, simply put, the stuff I'd like any teen kids I know to be watching.

3) PLL (if you don't know what that stands for, you can move on). This is my most totally fun show. It's like Sex and the City set in some weird supernatural suburb of teen girls. One of the best serial mysteries out there with remarkable production values--and I know I ain't the only viewer over 15 who is slavishly addicted to it. Lesbians, body issues, ethics, mean girls, nice girls, smart girls--I really do think this is the epitome of "Millennial Girls TV"...Any show that makes me alternately love and hate the teacher sleeping with the student gets props for making me question "easy moral decisions"--but mostly, I love the interplay of guessing and predicting that occurs online across such a wide and diverse swath of ages and sexualities and races...Aside from Degrassi the Next Generation, this show figured out social media and TV first. We should be studying it more.

4) Cosmos--I just gotta' give props here. My 5 1/2 year old loves this reincarnation and it is captivating and informative. Do yourself the bizarre favor of watching something produced by Seth McFarlane and FOX and dive into this miniseries. It will make you fall in love with all things science and wondrous.

5) Veronica Mars--ok. I finally got around to it after my American Airlines flight lost wi-fi. This was perfection (although really--can anyone explain to me what happened to Duncan, really?). I stopped watching the series towards the end (the rape storyline pissed me off), but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't feel in the dark because of that. Leave aside the genius of the Kickstarter campaign (and if you want to "see that coming," read my book Beyond the Box for how Rob Thomas predicted such an endeavor pre-Kickstarter)...This was just a fun movie, with cameos done even better (dare I say it?) than Muppet movies. Gratifying, true to characterization, felt like TV and a movie at once. Question (for next SCMS maybe)~ would it have been as gratifying without the Kickstarter element?

6) Good Wife--ok. Last but not least. I won't expound too long. But this really is one of the best dramas on TV (including cable--think of the restrictions). The episode was not so much clunky as pointing to several possibilities (we all knew that amazing Hunter Parrish was headed for something "just not right")...I thought he was going to just book or shoot himself or the professor (kind of love that we don't know if that professor was guilty). Maybe I'm tired as a mom-scholar, but I didn't see Will's death coming. And I am floored by the fact that no one spilled Josh Charles' departure--tat's rather epic. Maybe I'm also old, but the issues this show raises, both personal and professional, for women continues to make me happy to watch this show--and I'm pretty sure it's ratings would be higher if CBS HADN'T INSISTED ON PUTTING IT AFTER LIVE EVENT TV!!!! (and ergo, late all the time...) . Students of mine seeking drama writing (and directing and editing and music consultation--the show rocks in all these forums)...study this show.

OK--now on to other more "teacherly" things...
Get ye there! http://events.colum.edu/event/an_evening_with_gregory_van_horn#.UvlBwRYc3dE
(And I make no promises but if you're a fan of Big Brother at all, keep an eye out for possible guests this spring--or next Fall...)

I know you are all struggling back into your groove after a brutal winter that just won't quit, but getting busy early and often will energize you, I promise! Good things come to the hard-working--like the TV students who created and produced Film Fridays, which just advanced to a finalist round at the New York Festivals World's Best TV and Films (which had the good taste to also advance my favorite show, Orphan Black.) See FF here: http://www.frequencytv.com/filmfridays.html

Need some fresh TV before Orphan Black returns? There's tons out there that's yummy right now! I'm indulging in my ABC Family diet of The Fosters, Switched at Birth, Pretty Little Liars and Ravenswood (silly plot but insanely creepy and scary). Fellow fans, you know who you are (and hopefully caught the Community visit from our lead on S@B). I want Ezra to go down and need Callie to get her act together. Girls has been treating me well (which I did not think would be possible after last season's underwhelming finale). I will let you know if any of the mid-season replacements catch my fancy, but do check out Amazon Prime's foray into original TV with Bosch. And in a pinch, re-watch Veronica Mars to prepare for the movie arriving March 14th!!

Now, stop watching TV and get busy applying for internships (see Christy LeMaster) and fellowships and scholarships--tis the season! I'll tell you a weird secret--every year, the TV Department has to struggle to find enough people to apply for scholarships--get busy and apply, no matter how much of a long shot it seems. If you're "young," it's good practice at learning how to ask for money, something you'll need to do well in this industry! Visit:
Two more things: WaterCooler (our TV student journal online http://watercoolerjournal.com) is assisting with a really cool event at DePaul this May focused on celebrating the work of Joss Whedon.
Last--and pass it on: I'm on a team this spring that is looking at how the School of Media Arts can better prepare students for working in the complexities of the media industry today by working better across departments--especially in the area of non-fiction and in the area of online production. Tell me: What are we not teaching you that we should be? You should know where to find me...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-30868330107351163072013-11-25T22:09:00.001-08:002013-11-25T22:09:03.772-08:00Getting Through These Last Few Weeks...Just some words of late-night advice (see? Teachers stay up late, too! :D) Most of you out there in Columbia-land are alternately planning travel home to see family and friends, cramming in pre-production on a shoot/script/paper/presentation, and wondering how you'll EVER get through to week 15.

You will. I promise. Here are some friendly tips, rooted in my own schedule right now and vague memories of my college days...

1) if you've been stellar with attendance and have room for that day off, now is a good time to take it. Cash in on the sleep, or dive into that assignment. CAVEAT: DON'T SKIP OUT IF THERE ARE PROJECT PRESENTATIONS AND SUCH--your peers need you there when they're (literally) showing their stuff.

2) Beaver's Donuts. Any other food trucks. If you must be out and about in the cold Chicago-street-wind-tunnels, get ye some hot grub and coffee from a truck.

3) Really--if you're struggling and panicking, please talk to your teachers. Don't wait until week 15. Ask that question--I promise it's not a stupid one--and own up to both your limitations AND what you're capable of doing. The silent student is the student we WANT to hear from the most. And do a solid to your friends and roommates--if you see THEM struggling, pass this on and give them support instead of judging. You just never know what someone might be facing and feeling.

4) Embrace Thanksgiving, for at least one full day. If you're with family and friends, practice "the Columbia speech" that explains why you're pursuing a degree in the arts and how that can in fact land you a viable career and a happy life. If you're "stuck" here in Chicago, make the most of it--there are TONS of good movies out, ice rinks are opening, and watching the tourists on Michigan is actually genuinely comical. And give real thanks, even if you're facing crazy uncles and old friends you are struggling to connect with and final projects that seem doomed to failure. (If there's anything that irks us teachers more, it's giving up in the home stretch. IS THERE EXTRA CREDIT? FIND THE TIME TO DO IT! REMAINING OFFICE HOURS? MAKE AN APPOINTMENT!) You are in college, pursuing your true goals (or figuring out what those are), and somebody somewhere hopes you're headed for happiness and fulfillment; there are many worse scenarios you could be facing. (Take another kind of walk down Michigan Avenue...)

4) Build in a break post-Thanksgiving week...Watch The Sound of Music live on NBC with Carrie Underwood. You know you want to. And at the very least you might catch a live mishap. Take part in the Holly Jolly Trolley event run by Radio and being distributed through the TV Department http://events.colum.edu/event/wcrx_holly_jolly_trolley#.UpQ5IY1_dhQ

5) Please, as a teacher and mom here, for the love of all that is holy, get at least ONE decent night of sleep.

Catch you on the after-tryptophan side...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-35681252516110837452013-10-01T15:11:00.001-07:002013-10-01T15:11:48.088-07:00Busy October in TV Land!

Alright folks--especially student-folks! It's a busy month in October for TV stuff, so here are some tidbits first about upcoming events:

Cinema SlapDown--Girls!--on October 9th, at Film Row (8th floor of the Film Bldg), Chair if TV Michael Niederman and Huffington Post TV critic Maureen Ryan will debate the pros and cons of HBO's Girls, screening a few episodes. You get to ask them questions and offer your 2 cents! EXTRA CREDIT HISTORY STUDENTS: Attend and write up 2-pager that summarizes the debate and ties it to what we've discussed about gender so far (due week 9)

Bethany Rooney, acclaimed TV director--visiting on October 10th at 6pm, room 1301 of the TV Dept. Bldg.

Parents' Weekend--weekend of October 18th...I'll be around somewhere :D on Saturday morning and happy to meet with any parents. Let me know if yours are coming so we can try to meet up!
Emmy Thoughts:

Generally blah...still miffed that Tatiana Maslany didn't get nominated. And love Modern Family but enough already! Dead people montages never work, nor really does song and dance at the Emmys (or Oscars). Mayim Bialik (sp?) was robbed--though the lady from Nurse Jackie had the best acceptance speech ever.

New Show Thoughts:

I'm abysmally behind...but have liked Brooklyn 9-9, though maybe I'm just a little in love with Andre Baugher? :D EXTRA CREDIT HISTORY STUDENTS: watch any episode of a NEW fall BROADCAST show this term. Then write up a 2 pager that describes your episode and the show and relates it to the history of TV in some way. (Due last week of class.)

OK--off to more HIMYM catchup and such...Parenthood at the top of my list (though Parks and Rec made me cry a little this week too--in a good way...)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-5906712020761418012013-08-28T15:01:00.001-07:002013-08-28T15:10:48.905-07:00School is Starting...All right, folks--school starts in about 1 week!

My first blog of the academic year is mostly aimed at newbies (both firsters and transfers). If you're old school or alum, simply stay tuned her for my random TV thoughts (and alum per a fundraising event at Second City)...

NEW TO COLUMBIA IN ANY WAY? Please attend Convocation this Friday (there's food!) Give yourself time for the following:

1) book buying/finding

2) seek out where your classrooms are (not on paper--I mean physically go find the rooms because the first week is a crazy mess of students and slow elevators and hidden rooms). BEST TIP: show up 10 minutes early the first 2 weeks. If you're TV, ask John or Avery (our security guards) where to go and tell them I (Sharon Ross, TV) sent you.

3) get on your class pages--likely Moodle. See what's there. Ask about what isn't there. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT MOODLE IS, SEND ME AN EMAIL AT sross@colum.edu.

4) Figure out your nutritional needs ("nutritional" here used lightly--but hey--I AM a teacher!): There are some really amazing food trucks in the Chicago Loop that can broaden your horizons fairly cheaply beyond Dunkin (though they are quick on Harrison and Wabash), DQ, etc. Start here: http://www.chicagofoodtruckfinder.com/. South Loop is you. "General Loop" is walkable. West Loop will likely take too much time. My recs: http://beaversdonuts.com/ and http://www.thetamalespaceship.com/. Also, when you need a slightly nicer lunch (parents in town?)--go to Hackney's http://www.hackneys.net/locations/chicago/ and when you're jonesing for Mexican in-between classes go to Flaco's Tacos (next to Hackney's--they're quick and cheap) http://flacostacosonline.com/

5) The Dean of the School of Media Arts, Robin Bargar, knows his caffeine. And you should try to meet him once by start of Junior Year if you are in the School of Media Arts. Deans have taught and their job is to serve student development.

6) Now the teacherly advice: Make a point of meeting your teachers. Don't wait until you're frazzled...Find out their office hours and drop by for 10 minutes to say hi. Each of your teachers is busy with a gazillion things, but THEY WANT TO MEET YOU! We're not Gods/Goddesses, but we know an awful lot about Columbia that could be of use to you.

OK--Now on to my random TV thoughts (which is what most of this blog is):...

Teen Wolf (yeah, I know: "Teen Wolf?" you say?) is a great show. Think Buffy you Whedon fans...Everyone discounted that show, too, until it became hip. If you're into teen tropes, like Xander or Nathan Fillion--give Teen Wolf a chance on iTunes or Hulu...

Under the Dome-I've been enjoying but it seems crazily network slow.

ABC Family rocks my world. (I am learning a smidge of sign language, reveling in a depiction of a lesbian-led foster family, and [as all my past Teen TV students will attest to] ridiculously addicted to all things PLLiars.

There actually look to be some new inventive broadcast series this Fall. Stay tuned for my reactions. I am still upset about the cancellation of The B#@$%* in Apartment 2-something..."

I'm over 40. The Good Wife is pretty much the best drama on broadcast (Parenthood a close second). If you're a true TV geek, you'll watch these shows for dialogue alone...

I am still (choose your word) "irritated" that Orphan Black got shunted in the Emmys. While it's relevant that NetFlix had nominations, Orphan Black kicks butt against those shows and actors. Did you like Fringe? For the love of all that is holy to you, watch Orphan Black.

I like "Blurred Lines." I cannot explain why (musically, yes--video not so much.) Hannah Montana at the VMAs ruined it for me.

ALUMS--PALERMO SCHOLARSHIP EVENT 10/29/13. Long and short is a Second City event (bits of food, drink, silent auction, improv show just for us). Money goes to scholarships for TV students, the best of the best. We're aiming to offer 2 scholarships instead of 1. Tix are pricey in this economy, I know--but either consider the value of the event or donate what you can. Email me for more info.

So-check back! Come see me! I am (for TV students) your Associate Chair so don't be shy. And if you're not TV but just need some tips or advice, I am non-major discriminatory.

ps--I have a kid starting kindergarten...i.e., my posts don't come on a regular schedule! :D This may also result in the occasional Teen Titans Go review...:D

PPS--IF YOU LOVE, AHTE, LOVE TO HATE HBO'S GIRLS, THERE IS AN UPCOMING OCTOBER DEBATE ON CAMPUS BETWEEN THE CHAIR OF TV AND MAUREEN RYAN OF HUFFINGTONPOST.COM http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/ It's free and titled as a "slap down."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-4271038544580738302013-07-18T08:00:00.001-07:002013-07-18T08:00:58.301-07:00Pop Culture this Week: Death, Boredom, and Faux Hipness

What a wearying weak in media culture...Let's start with the Emmy noms, which bored me to tears. Most everyone (and show) is deserving--though I stake my claim that House of Cards--while not a bad show--is not all that great, either. Orphan Black was a better show, along with The Good Wife (once they took care of the Kalinda debacle)--and definitely Tatiana Maslany was robbed. There was more to like (or rather, less to yawn at) in comedy with Louie and Louis CK, Pohler (though Parks and Rec got robbed), and Mayim Bialik MUST win this year for Big Bang Theory, please! The only real surprise was Justin Bateman for Arrested Development. The award for faux hipness goes to the House of Cards nominations...it could turn into a really great show, but it's not there yet and I think the nominations are the Emmys way of saying: "See! We're hip and not afraid of Netflix!" So, yawn...yet again.

Another Faux Hipness award goes to Rolling Stone magazine for its cover photo of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect. I don't buy their rationale that his age matches their readers' demos, and his image (pulled from one of his social media accounts) is important because it urges us to ask how someone "who looks like that" could potentially have done such horrible things. It's instead Rolling Stone seeking to garner a big buy by having a controversial cover. It very well may be that the story inside is a good and important one, but cover images matter and tell their own story. I'd chalk it up to bad judgement, but I think the editors knew exactly what they were doing when choosing this cover.

Faux hipness award extraordinaire goes to CBS and Big Brother. I've chatted about this on FaceBook so will just reiterate that an inability to publicly chastise the crazies in the house this year is tantamount to condoning the racism and homophobia. And the fact that it took too long for CBS/BB to even acknowledge on air that anything had occurred (reserving the vitriol for the paid web stream) is broadcast ostrich syndrome (head in sand! can't see it! doesn't exist!). It's not hip to hide behind "it's reality TV--a social experiment--" if you have to be publicly "made" to actually air the social experiment's most revealing moments.

Last, very sad news per Cory Monteith of Glee. It will be interesting to see if the producers decide to address his death's linkage to heroin in some way and not just write him out in a blase way. It's a chance for the show to address a serious issue--if they did gun violence last spring, they owe it to their viewers to examine the rise in heroin usage among teens and young adults as well.

Tune in...I'll likely return again right at the top of the semester!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-67183520607926524012013-07-01T00:03:00.000-07:002013-07-01T00:03:01.264-07:00Have finished Orphan Black...

Hands down, can't remember the last time I saw such a stellar first year of a show. I wish I could go into a TV coma until it returns. Can someone explain to me why U.S. TV can't figure out the glorious advantages of short seasons, inexpensive co-productions, and the guts to say "I don't need 3 years off before I return?" (sorry U.S. cable, but if you need more than 6 months to bounce back from a 10-12 ep season, you're just spoiled...)

The rest of my July will be catching up on fun summer fare (mostly ABC Family) and researching for the book and deciding what shows I have to screen for my Nickelodeon Network class. (Not a bad way to spend July.)

New students--give me your thoughts on summer TV you're watching! (And if you're brand new students, be sure to attend the Weeks of Welcome at Columbia--it's a blast and will give you a true sense of what Columbia is like...)

Now must wrap my first official night off by watching Pretty Little Liars...:DAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-6375150421919271612013-06-23T23:37:00.001-07:002013-06-23T23:43:18.772-07:00OK--I usually go dormant in summerBUT...Between the new ABC Family shows, the upcoming Under the Dome and The Bridge, and tonight's penultimate season of Mad Men ending, I gotta give a few thoughts (albeit randomly).

Perhaps this will give my upcoming new students a sense of my personality (which is admittedly a late-night/early morning one--sue me, I'm a mom of a 5 year old). So here's my take on summer TV so far and I'll update here-and-there as I'm able before our Fall term starts.

1) Mad Men. If you're not watching you should be. If you're in my TV History class or Sara's Mad Men class, for god's sake get caught up. (It will make the 1 week we spend on 1960s TV so much easier on you...). I enjoyed the season (and not just because I identify with Peggy and adore James Wolk). This season, to me, refracted the first perfectly. Don't wanna spoil and happy to come to Sara's class in the fall to expound--let's just say every character slipped through the looking glass of season one. My prediction? Season 7 is somewhere between 1971-72... (and if you think Megan is gone, just think about what you know of soaps and twins and Patty Duke--watch what Don watches closely...)

2) No good TV in summer? Hogwash! All depends on what you're looking for. Teen Wolf has been kickin it and this is their first monster season episode number wise, so you know you're in for a good slow burn. As far as I'm concerned, this is Boy Buffy flipped--and even though I'm a feminist, I'm good with that largely because of Stiles and Lydia. (Don't tell me you don't think Xander and Cordelia when you watch these two.) Switched at Birth continues to impress (though it's been a bit slow) and Pretty Little Liars is keeping me guessing (esp. with the reappearance of Allison's mom obviously off meds or rocker)...And I did not think I would like The Fosters but I do so far. Haven't done Twisted yet but will catch up on that from the DVR in July...

3) The Bridge and Under the Dome both look promising.

4) and a final plea--it's over but I'm catching up now--if you haven't watched it, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SNAP FUN TV WATCH ORPHAN BLACK! (and don't dare spoiler it for me because I have 4 eps left). Woman deserves an emmy nom (and it's a hoot seeing Degrassi actors in a sic-fy-i show...)

OK--newbies and old students...More after I've caught up from sumer chairing and shifted into summer TV catch-up mode. Once we near the new season (hardee had) of school you'll get more regular posts of things TV, Columbia College TV Department, etc....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-38125298781527175162013-04-24T13:09:00.000-07:002013-04-24T13:09:01.789-07:00COME TO THE LUKE PALERMO COOKING DEMO! and the School and TV Department have a lot of events coming up that you may want to venture out to explore.
TV History students looking for extra credit? Anyone else looking for a Saturday Night Live like nite out but can't swing the ticket to NYC? Come to FreqOut 2013, the TV Department's live sketch comedy show. We bring in a live studio audience to watch the show at the Media Production Center (and also stream it live online). If you're doing the extra credit, view the show and give me 2 pages on how what you see (in terms of production, genre, content) can be connected to any aspect of TV's History that we've covered this semester. https://securelb.imodules.com/s/644/index.aspx?sid=644&gid=1&pgid=4334&cid=14937
And just for fun, ever wonder sometimes how writing papers about TV history and social issues can help you out? TV alum Lena Waithe had to write things like this for me--she went on to find a place for herself as an African American woman in the industry, something that motivated the kind of paper topics she chose. Last month she won a prestigious award from the Writers Guild of America for diversity in comedy writing. http://www.imdb.com/news/ni49894141/Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-43837822156150321602013-03-15T15:51:00.001-07:002013-03-15T15:51:16.435-07:00TV STUDENTS--NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY!

In the past few weeks, Columbia Learning Community students worked with instructor Matt Till to create an instructional video on school safety procedures...Nice to see our students helping younger ones produce their own work for the good of their immediate community! School Safety

We also have coming up in the TV Department some fabulous Box Lunches, where professionals come meet with students to tell stories of life in the trenches of TVLand and give tips (for more info contact clemaster@colum.edu). Here is the current schedule:

March 21st- Kevin Cross, Comcast Sports Net Chicago

April 11- Mary Lou Belli, Emmy Award Winning Director

April 21- Rob Morhaim WCIU Morning Show

The Box Lunches occur mostly in Studio A, 15th floor, 600 South Michigan. HISTORY OF TV STUDENTS...If you attend Mary Lou Belli's tak and find out about the shows she's worked on that pertain to issues of African Americans represented on TV, there's extra credit in it for you! Attend, and then write up a 1-pager about what she said and tie it to what we've learned about race and TV so far for points!)

Famed Latina documentarian Lourdes Portillo is also coming to the TV department the week after spring break! Keep an eye out for when there will be screenings and talks with her...

and last, just for fun...If you're into reality TV (either loving it or hating it), check out Burning Love. The second season is online and the first is airing on E! Anyone in my classes who reads this far and can tell me who is the panda girl gets bonus points...

My short 2 cents (since it's late and Kimmel is coming on and will be infinitely more entertaining)...(there's your hint...) DO THE OSCARS MAKE FOR GOOD TV? (even when a Colum student is on screen...)

Well, it may depend on how you define TV. In terms of per TV event--eh? Poorly paced...when I can host a party with 2 toddlers and 2 junior high gals AND get them all off to bed and not miss a beat? That would be the epitome of slow. Hand to holy, I skipped 45 minutes and didn't miss a thing.

Seth McFarlane was top-notch--funny and charming and talented when they gave him some screen time. The front matter was great...and then it went down-hill in terms of pacing and content/order of content:

--How is playing the Bond theme over and over a "montage" of songs? When will the Academy learn to shift smaller categories--as much as I respect short docs and short live-actions--to cable like the Emmys do? Why do I need to see the cast of Chicago--an okay movie... but hardly on a par with something like The Godfather of The Graduate or hell, even ET...referenced over and over again?

Folks, learn about producing live...and I guess scripting live? The only tweets I could find during the actual show were from Britain, which means even McFarlane couldn't rescue this for the key demo they hired him for. One of you out there in Columbia TV should be able to fix this I hope.

Meantime...Semester in LA info sessions are this week...look for the SILA info page on Columbia's website and attend if you think you might be interested in the next 2 years...

(still, happy per Lawrence and her trip up the stairs, and the Argo best pic win--while not my pick--was expected and sweet--esp. if you subscribe to my J-Garner theory)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-35776276033461123302013-02-14T14:29:00.001-08:002013-02-14T14:29:14.313-08:00Come Meet a Real Live TV Producer and Writer!

On Thursday February 21st, the Television Department will be hosting TV writer-producer Jeff Vlaming in a Q&A session moderated by me :D. Jeff Vlaming is a television writer and producer who has worked extensively in Hollywood. He’s
written and produced a number of notable genre and non-genre series alike,
including The X-Files, Northern Exposure, Fringe, NCIS and Battlestar
Galactica. Most recently he was
co-executive producer of MTV’s Teen Wolf. He's also worked on Xena and Reaper, so he knows the world of cult, netlets, and original syndicated programs.

Jeff will be visiting various writing classes throughout next week, but the Q&A is a chance for those of you not in TV writing classes to hear him speak and ask questions. (Feel free to tell me if there's anything you'd like me to ask him specifically about.)

The Q&A is in Studio A (TV Department, 15th floor, ACC). Please arrive by 12pm and the talkin' will run through 1pm.

Welcome back, everyone! I thought I'd start off spring (rather literally feels like it's spring, too, today) with my 2 cents on awards season so far...It's one of the best parts about the first few weeks of the semester :D.

I have yet to see Lincoln or Les Mis (and am waiting til cable, as I'm not terribly interested in either enough to fork over the money--unless any of you tell me differently?) I'm thinking this year's Oscars should actually be fun for betting, with so many awards going to Argo and Affleck and him not being nominated. My votes so far are going to Silver Linings PlayBook, which I found infinitely better than Zero Dark Thirty on pretty much every count. I'm actually fascinated with how much I disliked 0D30--maybe it's just the hype that's irritating me...or that the acting in SLP was top notch, and that SLP actually had a cohesive narrative and a point to make...

Per TV, the awards are coming in as I expected from the Golden Globes, SAG, AFI--though I continue to insist that Amy Poehler is being robbed more each year.

For best TV of last week, please make sure you see the pentultimate episode of 30 Rock--the Willy Wonka referencing alone was worth it. Be watching BunHeads as that's returned in fine form. And join me in mourning the passing of Don't Trust the B_ in Apt. 23, sadly cancelled which now means there's a loss in my sitcom life--that show was so much fun!

Looking forward to your career future this term? Then look into the ATAS internships this summer (deadline March 15th); it's a paid gig and a great opportunity to break your way directly into the industry in categories ranging from writing to casting to kids TV--just about every category you might imagine (see emmysfoundation.org).

Looking just to get through the first week? Look for Beaver's Donut truck on Wabash and Van Buren, 7:30-11:30am, 1/30/13. Beyond delicious and will get you through that 9am class (http://beaversdonuts.com/). (Bring cash...)

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-32260025785227271462012-10-14T23:44:00.003-07:002012-10-14T23:44:34.642-07:00And this week in TV...

So I am now officially swamped with TV viewing, and some shows have had to be sacrificed--bye bye Elementary (just not good enough to make me ditch any of my tried and trues), and sadly bye bye Last Resort (on too heavy of a TV nite and my DVR can't accommodate it--hoping it sticks around and gets shifted to another nite and slot). Not sure about the 666 show--any thoughts on if I should stick with it?

If you like Revenge (which you should :D), try Nashville. Great pilot and I can't wait to see all these fabulous actors chew the scenery each week; and the songs are actually pretty good as well. (Speaking of which--Glee so far is doing quite well at weathering the shift to a new cast...) And while I respect Taylor Swift and find some of her stuff catchy, I rather enjoy the digs at her expense via Hayden Pantierre. Need to watch Arrow, too.

Lots of solid returns so far, with ABC Wednesday leading the way. Good Wife is stellar (and finally not being bumped off my DVR via football) with Nathan Lane and Kristin Chenoweth (would like to see Matthew Perry return here--he was so amazing last season). And anytime I can catch Lucy Lawless (Parks and Rec) I'm a happy camper.

For my TV comedy buffs out there--and for my History students trolling for extra credit--please check out "The Greatest Event in Television History." True story: my husband DVR'd it and I deleted it because I thought he'd recorded some PBS special that there just wasn't room for on the machine. We watched it tonight and I had tears streaming from my eyes--slam dunk funny!

(Check it out here:

No major news that I know of this week in the department, except: Registration for J-term and Spring begins in a few weeks, which means you should start planning to meet with your faculty advisor...And Oh yeah! TV Department students, faculty, and alum got quite a few Midwest Regional Emmy nominations (so check out the TV page for news on that).

Until roughly midterms, yours in shared "how do I watch all the good shows" misery...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00032773601183094197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460810331474571404.post-79727852802974633722012-10-02T22:53:00.002-07:002012-10-02T23:16:12.572-07:00This Week in TV Land, Columbia Style<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
